Calligraphy

How it Started

Remember back in elementary school your teacher would ask for a volunteer to write notes on the board during class? My hand would be the FIRST to raise! This probably isn’t as applicable to today where tablets and fancy white boards are used in school, but for me growing up, it was something about a pen to paper that brought such calmness and creativity to my soul.

I’ve always had a love for the hobby of journaling/bullet journaling - picking out the color pens, stickers, washi tape you name it! I could be in the office supply section at any store for hours. One day in my college dorm room I decided that I wanted to learn calligraphy (probably not the best idea as I was procrastinating on studying - but I still graduated?) That hobby stuck with me throughout my college career and was the foundation I didn’t know I built to my future passion.

In 2020, I was working remotely at my full-time job, and in school for my Masters in Healthcare Administration. My boyfriend at the time, now hubby, aka Mr. Sweet said to me, “Why don’t you start posting your calligraphy art on Instagram?” And so I did! It was the creative outlet I didn’t know I needed. I knew very well that my audience at the time were my friends and family but that did not stop me from posting every day, sometimes 2x a day and all because… I loved it. The sense of having something that is mine. The ability to create out of joy, feeling fulfilled, and a place to show my authentic self.

The Heart Behind The Hand

Why it Started

As a first-generation Filipina American growing up in a traditional Asian household where academic excellence was highly valued, I was expected to solely focus on my education and career path.

My options were to become a doctor, nurse, lawyer or accountant, the artist/creative path was unfortunately not in my wheelhouse. Although I did have a strong interest in the medical field, I also naturally had a creative side that I would lean into.

I was drawn to calligraphy specifically because of how interesting I thought peoples’ penmanship was so unique to one another. I remember in school I can recognize who wrote what because of their handwriting and would analyze each letter. Calligraphy was similar - each calligraphers’ lettering is so unique to themselves. It was an art form that harmoniously blends the discipline and precision my parents instilled in me with the creative expression that resonates with my inner self.

What began with a brush pen and YouTube tutorials evolved into something profoundly personal: a meditative practice, a creative outlet, and ultimately, my authentic form of artistic expression. Each stroke became a celebration of craftsmanship, each flourish a testament to finding joy in creating something beautiful by hand in our increasingly artistic world.
